Wind turbine information of horizontal and vertical
Horizontal Vs Vertical Wind Turbine
Wind turbines mainly have two designs: horizontal axis(Like our Sunning Wind Turbine) or vertical axis.
Horizontal-axis wind turbine generally has three or five blades propeller that catches the windward. Vertical wind turbine has a set of blades that spins around a vertical axis. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages and is suited to different installing environments.
Wind Direction and Speed
In order to work properly, the horizontal-axis turbine needs the wind to flow at a right angle to the blades. If it blows from a different direction where the blades are facing, the turbine gets much less energy from the wind. To adapt changes of wind direction, horizontal turbine has a yaw drive that rotates the unit’s direction. Vertical turbine runs regardless of wind direction, making it better-suited to urban areas among tall buildings where has limited space to install.
Wind Energy Efficiency
Horizontal-axis wind turbines can convert more wind energy into useful mechanical power because the blades are perpendicular to wind direction so the blades can pick up more energy throughout their range of movement. By comparison, vertical-axis wind turbine suffer an disadvantage of low efficiency in transfering energy from the wind cause it can only drag wind on the front side.
Market Preference
Although the vertical-axis turbine has a few advantages over the horizontal design, different scales of energy users have chosen the horizontal-axis generators, leaving vertical-axis generation to small commercial or individuals uses. The horizontal axis is simpler to understand and has lower cost, can meets the expectations of end-users. Vertical-axis generators have historically been the object of exaggerated claims and higher cost causing doubt for potential users.
